The year 2009 marks the 23rd year of the Florence Community Chorus. While rehearsing before Christmas 1986, members of the Florence Community Band liked the idea of having a chorus sing Christmas carols with the band. Band member, Don Whitis, agreed to direct a choral group. In 1988, after two seasons of Christmas performances, the chorus began weekly practices with Don continuing to direct the group. Becky Taylor is their pianist.

The Chorus’s membership hovers around 30-40 persons of all ages from the
Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati communities. They sing a variety of popular, golden oldies, patriotic, and religious music. The chorus has sung at a variety of places over the years including civic functions, church events, business and family gatherings, libraries, weddings, funerals, and private parties. It has fared well in adjudicated concerts and sung at the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Devou Park band shell, and NKU’s Greeves Auditorium. At the other end of the spectrum, the chorus sang an early gig at a “Price Savers” opening where the chorus stood precariously on risers next to frozen food cases while shoppers jostled by with their carts!

Thanks to capable director Don Whitis, talented accompanist, faithful members, and its sponsor, the City of Florence, the Chorus continues to flourish after 20 years bringing entertainment and enjoyment to its members, the Northern Kentucky community, and beyond.
